- What kind of public transportation is available from Gunnison airport to Mt. Crested Butte?
The Alpine Express provides door-to-door shuttle service between Gunnison or Montrose airport and Mt Crested Butte. They request 48hr advance reservations. 970-349-6138. There are also rental car options at the airports through Avis, Budget and Hertz.
- Where can we purchase groceries?
Crested Butte has two grocery stores. Clarks Market Grocery (970-349-6492 500 Belleview Ave is the larger of the two. Then we have Mountain Earth Whole Foods 970-349-5132 405 4th Street for those who appreciate more organic groceries, dairy, cheese, granola, natural and alternative remedies, herbs, beverages, books, special diet foods. For a larger selection, there are several large chains in Gunnison.
- Is the water safe to drink?
The water at Chateaux is not only safe to drink, but delicious! There's no need for bottled water; save the environment and your money.
- Will my cell phone work in Mt. Crested Butte?
In general, we get terrific cell phone coverage in the Crested Butte area from Verizon and AT&T providers. Sprint does not work really well.
- Do you have internet access?
We have free wireless internet available in each unit. Your rental provider will give you current code password.
- Can we get discounted lift tickets through Chateaux?
Not at this time. We're working on it.
- Where can we rent ski equipment?
There are plenty of ski rental companies in Mount Crested Butte. Christy Sports has committed to providing excellent equipment, service and value and a special 20% discount to Chateaux guests. Just phone (970) 349-6601 and mention you are staying at The Chateaux.
- Where can we rent a playpen for our infant?
Chateaux rents playpens, booster seats, bed rails and humidifiers for a low daily rate. Check with Chateaux manager at manager@chateauxcb.org or call 970-349-5576 and he'll be happy to assist you.
- How far is The Chateaux from the base area?
Chateaux is about 500 yards from the base area. A short 4-minute walk or a few minute ride on the free bus that passes through the property and goes drectly to the base on a frequent, regular basis.
- How can we get the pool code?
Your rental provider will give you current pool password.
- How can we find out if Monarch, Kebler, or Cottonwood passes are open?
Following the first big snowstorm in the fall, Kebler and Cottonwood passes are closed and usually open with the spring thaw around mid-May. They are beautiful routes to take to and from Crested Butte--especially to witness the summer wildflowers and fall colors! - What can I do to prevent altitude sickness?
Take it easy the first few days you're here, drink a lot of water, and limit your alcohol and caffine intake.
20% of people develop mild symptoms at altitudes between 6,300 to 9,700 feet. Mount Crested Butte sits at 9,400 feet. Some of the first signs of high-altitude illness are headache, lightheadedness, weakness, trouble sleeping and an upset stomach. Rest, drink water, take Tylenol for headache. If you don't feel better in a day or so, go to a lower altitude—like Crested Butte or Gunnison.- and consult a doctor.
